Institute for Excellence in Writing

IEW is the perfect curriculum for students working on core skills. 

IEW Student Structure & Style: Level A, Year 1

For 4th graders to 6th graders 

This is 30-week class that meets Mondays, 3:00-4:00pm  


This class is for upper elementary students who are just beginning their writing careers.  Using the Level A course from the Institute for Excellence in Writing, the instructor will guide students through the basic structure of the core types of writing and get students on a path of confidence and proficiency.  The course starts with the foundations of writing and builds gradually towards more independence, creativity, and sophistication. Through extensive modeling and guided practice, students learn to organize and express their ideas clearly and effectively, setting them on a course for lifelong competency.


In this course, students learn the following structural models:

- note taking

- paragraphs

-stories

-simple reports

-writing from pictures

-research reports

-creative writing

IEW Student Structure & Style: Level B, Year 1

For rising 5th graders through 8th graders

This is a 30-week class that meets EITHER Mondays 2:00-3:00 pm OR 5:30-6:30 pm


For rising 8th graders through 10th graders 

This is a 30-week class that meets Mondays 6:30-7:30 pm


Prerequisite: SSS-B, Year 1 is a course for students who have completed SWI-A or SSS A, Year 2. While review will be included in this level, students should have a clear understanding of the topics and techniques covered in SWI-A or SSS-A, Year 2.  One way to meet this prerequisite is to attend one of our IEW prep camps this summer. In this course, students will learn to do the following:

-use a variety of stylistic techniques including sophisticated vocabulary, complex sentence structure, and decorations such as dramatic openers and similes

- write research reports from multiple sources

- write five-paragraph reports using topics, introduction, and conclusion

- conduct an interview and write their findings

- write letters

- write book and movie critiques

- edit their work for grammar, syntax, and usage

IEW Student Structure & Style: Level C, Year 1

For middle school and high school students

This is a 30-week class that meets Mondays 4:30-5:30 pm


Prerequisite: SSS-C, Year 1 is a course for students who have completed SWI-B, SICC-B, or SSS B, Year 2. While review will be included in this level, students should have a clear understanding of the topics and techniques covered in SWI-B, SICC-B, or SSS-B, Year 2.


In this course, students will learn to do the following:

-use a variety of stylistic techniques including sophisticated vocabulary, complex sentence structure, and decorations such as dramatic openers and similes

- write research reports from multiple sources

- write basic, expanded, persuasive, personal, and super essays

- write from pictures

- write letters

- write book and movie critiques

-write responses to literature

- edit their work for grammar, syntax, and usage

IEW classes fill quickly. Please register as soon as possible for the class you would like your child to attend. 


All IEW classes are $530 for thirty 60-minute classes. 


You will receive an invoice before the class begins.  You may pay the tuition in its entirety or break it into monthly payments, due by the first of each month. 


If payment is a hardship that will prevent your child from attending classes or workshops at Young Writers Institute, please contact us. We can find a solution!
