We are excited to announce our 2026 Summer Camps! We hope your child can join us and share in the fun of writing with fellow young creatives. All writers welcome - always!
General information
What is camp like?
We keep things busy and fun while we create!
Grades 3-4
9am-12pm
One of our most popular camps is back again! Students will create an original superhero and a formidable nemesis, designing their powers, weaknesses, motivations, and backstories. Will your hero have invisibility, x-ray vision, super speed - or perhaps a power no one has ever imagined before? Writers will then craft an action-packed story in which hero and villain clash, strategies unfold, and only one achieves their ultimate goal. This camp is perfect for kids who love to write fast-paced stories full of action and excitement!
Grades 6-7
1pm-4pm
This camp is for writers who want to create worlds of their own and tell epic stories set within them. We’ll explore the building blocks of great fantasy - unique settings, powerful magic systems, heroic (and villainous!) characters, and high-stakes quests. Then we will invent maps, create original creatures and cultures, and send their characters on daring journeys filled with obstacles, mysteries, and surprising choices. By the end of the camp, each student will have written a complete fantasy story (or the opening chapters of a longer one), along with a rich fantasy world they can continue to explore long after camp ends. Perfect for writers ready to think bigger and bring their imagined worlds to life on the page!
Grades 5-6
9am-12pm
Cultures all over the world have their own unique mythologies. We will read widely to explore myths and legends from different cultures and discover the shared elements that make these stories so powerful. Students will learn about quests, magical objects, larger-than-life characters, and the lessons myths often teach. Using these fascinating stories as inspiration, writers will create a cast of original characters - heroes and heroines, gods and goddesses, and creatures both beautiful and terrifying - and send them off on an epic adventure filled with challenges, magic, and discovery!
Ages 13+
1pm-4pm
Ready to bring your writing out into the world? Join us for a camp designed to help teens prepare their stories, poems, and essays for submission to prestigious writing contests, anthologies, and literary publications. Learn how to craft compelling entries, polish your work, and navigate contest guidelines with confidence. With the guidance and support of your instructor and peers, you'll transform your ideas into quality, submittable pieces. We’ll also develop a contest calendar to keep you on top of your submissions throughout the year, and each student will begin their own online portfolio. This camp will help you gain confidence and direction as you grow your audience!
Grades 5-6
9am-12pm
Of course, actual time travel isn’t possible (yet!) but luckily, with the power of our imaginations, we can go anywhere and anyWHEN we want! The idea of time travel has fascinated people for centuries, inspiring incredible stories from H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine to Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time. In this camp, students will design their own time machines, choose the eras or even alternate worlds they want to explore, and craft thrilling adventures that blend science fiction, fantasy, history, and mystery. Along the way, we’ll explore how characters respond to changing times, face challenges, and solve problems in new and surprising ways. Writers will experiment with plot twists and imaginative worldbuilding as they bring their time-traveling stories to life.

Embark on a delectable adventure with our food blogging class, where the art of capturing flavors and sharing culinary experiences comes to life! Throughout the week, we will travel on foot through Downtown Cary’s culinary landscape, tasting treats from various restaurants and bakeries. We’ll explore techniques for describing flavors, textures, and aromas, as well as translating dining experiences into compelling stories to share with other food lovers. We’ll also learn how to photograph food to create an irresistible visual component to enhance the narratives. It’s bound to be our most delicious week!
The camp price includes all food from local eateries. If possible, please bring a phone or digital camera. We can provide this if needed! This camp involves walking in the Downtown Cary area, up to one mile total per day.
Grades 3-4
1pm-4pm
Comic books and graphic novels are a relatively new and explosively popular literary form. That means that it is totally open for experimentation! First we'll create characters - maybe classic superheroes, or maybe someone totally new. We'll explore how story techniques evolve in this format, and how professional graphic novelists incorporate dialogue, exposition, emotion, and action with pictures and words. Then we'll plan a fantastic story using varied composing and drawing techniques. Each student will work to create at least the first three pages and the cover of the comic book, and they can take their work home to finish on their own. Don't worry about drawing skills - no artistic experience is needed to create an amazing comic book!
Grades 3-4
9am-12pm
Get ready to meet the cleverest characters in storytelling! In this camp, students will dive into the world of trickster tales - stories from cultures all over the world featuring sly animals, mischievous humans, and clever heroes who always find a way to outsmart the rules. We’ll read classic trickster tales and discover what makes these stories so tricky, funny, and memorable. Students will then become storytellers themselves, inventing their own wily characters, crafting sly plots, and learning how to use humor, surprise, and clever twists!
Grades 5-7
1pm-4pm
World-building is essential to so many setting-specific genres, such as fantasy, adventure, and science fiction. It also happens to be one of the most creative, interesting, and FUN parts of the writing process! In our camp, we'll work to develop a new world with details about its inhabitants, its topography, its history, and its conflicts. Through extensive map-making and scene-building, we'll create visual and written representations of our imagined worlds and their elements so that we have a solid understanding of how they function. Then we'll imagine the stories that could happen in these worlds and write to share them!
Grades 3-4
9am-12pm

Quests have been a part of the human narrative since we first began telling stories, and they remain just as captivating and thrilling today as they were thousands of years ago. Characters are driven by a need or a desire to seek, to find, to experience, and to discover, and they will stop at nothing to reach their goals! In our camp, we’ll first define an object of the quest, then create an adventurous character that rises to the challenge. Then we’ll send them on their journeys where they’ll face seemingly insurmountable obstacles and watch how they use their strength, wit, and charm to complete their quests.
Grades 5-6
9am-12pm
Paranormal stories elevate the ordinary world by adding magic, mythical creatures, terrifying beasts, or unexplained events. Create a supernatural object or being and build a story around its unique traits! Does your story have a mischievous elf, a bloodthirsty vampire, a magical sword, mysterious floating orbs, or maybe a terrible storm that leaves something strange behind? The possibilities are endless...let's explore!
Grades 3-4
1pm-4pm
As ocean travel flourished in the 1700s and 1800s, the seas were full of dangerous pirates. What was a pirate's life really like? What sort of quests did they undertake, and how did they plan their daring raids? How did they operate clever schemes, escape capture, and survive treacherous waters? In this camp, we’ll learn about the lives of Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, Captain Jack, Madame Cheng, and other fearsome pirates who made history and legend, and use them as inspiration to craft our own thrilling tales of adventure on the high seas. From secret coves and hidden treasure to epic battles and clever escapes, young writers will bring their stories to life with suspense, humor, and imagination!
